Sheep Art

I was extremely excited to teach this spring sheep art lesson that I found at artprojectsforkids.org. I knew my students would be up for the challenge of learning how to draw sheep. They turned out even better than I expected and we had a great time creating the drawings.
I helped out by demonstrating how to draw the sheep step by step.

Awesome work!

A few finished products!

Spring Where are You?

We are still waiting for spring in Manitoba and it doesn't seem to be coming anytime soon. Even though we are still dressing for the colder weather, my first graders and I have decided to work on spring activities anyway.
I found this cute poem about the month of March and we talked about the lion and lamb analogy. Although it was cold, we still had many "lamb" weather days!

Ouch Stories

We have been finishing up our "Ouch Stories" for upcoming Triad Conferences. My students have been working extremely hard on their stories and are excited to share their finished stories with their parents. I am very proud of all of the hard work they have been putting into these stories!

Students began by coming up with an idea and filling in this story map.

Next, students created a three part rough copy.

Once their rough copies were finished and edited, students began creating their final copies.

Shape Creatures

We decided to create 2D shape creature art.

We drew creatures made out of many different shapes.

Then we outlined the creature and painted the picture with watercolour paints.

We also painted the background of the picture to make the picture POP!

We reviewed the 2D shapes we had been learning about and I showed examples of 2D shape creatures that other students had created.

This was a great activity to complete our 2D shape study. My students loved this activity because they were given the opportunity to create whatever they wanted. Each creature was very creative and unique!

Conference Time!

It is almost that time again... Triad Conferences. I am always looking for fun ways students can demonstrate their learning. Students can also independently share this activity with their parents. I came across this cute Math About Me activity from TPT by Melissa Machan. I had my students share their Math About Me projects with their classmates.

We Have Been Busy!

I'm glad to have completed report cards and now I'm looking forward to a restful Spring Break... My students have been busy designing pencil crayon holders as a culminating activity to our Science unit on Objects and Materials. They did a great job and are very proud of their finished products.  Before beginning their pencil crayon holders they created a design plan and we created a list of criteria as a class.
Criteria for the pencil crayon holder:
- Must hold at least 20 pencil crayons
- Must be easy to carry
- Must look nice
- Be CREATIVE!

Number of the Day

We are practicing representing a number in different ways. Here is the number of the day file Number of the Day I use with my first grade students.
